TOP TO BOTTOMAustralia celebrate a dominant campaign; local fans in Clermont-Ferrand; Emma Tonegato was in inspired form in AtlantaBy the end of the second round, in the Brazilian city of Sao Paulo, Australia’s women sat with a maximum 40 points, 12 clear of New Zealand and Canada tied for second place. In truth Australia were a class apart, handling the soaking wet conditions with aplomb to ultimately see off an impressive Canada in the final and take their record to 12 wins from 12.Atlanta was the tournament where Australia put one hand on the series trophy. They started with a wobble against a resurgent England but, inspired by player of the tournament Emma Tonegato, finished strongly by seeing off closest rivals New Zealand 24-19 in a breathless final. It would be Australia’s last Cup success of the season. Heather Fisher powered England to the Langford title in Canada as they edged New Zealand in a superb final and in May, with three months until the Olympic Games, Ghislaine Landry helped inspire Canada to a 29-19 win against Australia in the inaugural Clermont-Ferrand Sevens final in front of a passionate Stade Gabriel-Montpied crowd.Fourteen points clear in the final standings, though, there was no question that over the course of the season the Australians had proven themselves one step ahead, and so it would also prove in Rio.
