In 2016, IMPACT Beyond programmes ran alongside individual rounds of the men’s and women’s HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series and also the World Rugby U20 Trophy in Zimbabwe. The year also heralded the launch of the IMPACT Beyond projects for Women’s Rugby World Cup 2017 in Ireland and Rugby World Cup 2019 in Japan, with the latter having three aims – investment in Asian unions to strengthen their administration, governance and financial management, growing the game in Asia and getting more rugby on the continent’s television networks.OLYMPIC FOCUSThe year’s main focus, however, was around the Olympic Games and separate projects were run around regional sevens qualifiers, the climactic qualifying repechage tournaments in Monaco and Dublin, the Olympic test event and also, of course, the Games themselves. To ensure a lasting legacy from the IMPACT Beyond programme at the Games, a Rio-specific Get Into Rugby programme was launched in March 2015 and much work was done in the 16-month countdown. World Rugby’s IMPACT Beyond programmes run alongside all of the governing body’s major events, harnessing supporters’, union and corporate interest on-location to drive development, participation, coaching, volunteering and business programmes.CREATING AN IMPACT BEYOND RIO 2016IMPACT BEYOND IN NUMBERS25festivalsLEFT AND RIGHTA Rio-specific Get Into Rugby programme was delivered on Copacabana Beach in the build-up to the GamesBELOW LEFTIMPACT Beyond events helped spread Olympic excitement in countries such as IndiaRIO DE JANEIRO45workshops400clinics450schools and clubs reached1,500 trained coaches and teachers23,000youngsters participated58 WORLD RUGBY YEAR IN REVIEW 2016PARTICIPATE | IMPACT BEYOND
